We sometimes get distracted with all of the new places opening up around town and forget about the stalwarts. The Shamrock is one of the handful of foreign owned independent bars in town and will be celebrating their tenth anniversary later this year. The Shamrock is a favourite haunt of students and sports fans and is one of the places non-locals go to feel home away from home. Their TV screen often shows football matches playing and as the week dips toward the weekend, regular events such as Wednesday pool, Thursday Salsa, and weekend drink specials make for a decent crowd in the evenings.
Coffee for ten yuan from ten until six, all day breakfast, lunch specials, and wi-fi all make the Shamrock a worthy daytime destination. The Shamrock recently invited MORE to sample some of the lunch menu. The specials ring up around 25-40RMB, including a couple of pastas, sandwiches, curry beef, and sambal squid over rice. We asked for the beef parmigiana sandwich, a piece of knife and fork work topped with fried eggplant and tomato and sided with fries and a small cup of salad. The dessert that day was chocolate cake. It was the warm, dense, fudgey style of cake which we don't run into very often in Chengdu, and was sided with vanilla ice cream.
This section of Renmin Nan Lu used to have a cluster of Western restaurants, but with the closing/relocating of a few of their neighbours, we have more and more reasons to return to the Shamrock when we are in the neighbourhood. Their menu prices have not risen as steeply as most places over the past year or two, with most entrees coming up around 40-60RMB. We are impressed with their website, which shows the sports schedule, events, and menu.
