Chengdu often seems to have more than its share of fusion restaurants, but occasionally some new and appealing combination comes along. Rice Plus has recently popped up opposite the Zongbei Middle School, in the row of smaller shops that offer dumplings, noodles, and congee. The window proclaims Curry&Hamburg, [sic] Coffee&Milkshake, [sic] and the concept is Western and Asian-style comfort food over rice. The first item on the menu was Japanese-style pork curry. Thai, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Catalan, South American, and Italian styles of some comfort food over rice were also available. We really like that each selection on the English and Chinese menu is available in small, medium, or large sizes. Most of the menu items are priced in the low 20s and you can turn your order into a set meal with soup and a side for an additional 10RMB. When I dropped in around noon, most of the customers were picking up lunch boxes to go.
I asked for a small order of stewed hamburg [sic] rice, which the Chinese menu claimed to be Hawaiian style, and got a ground beef patty covered in a tangy sauce that was generous with chunks of mushroom. It definitely hit the right comfort food notes. The potato salad took a few bites to get used to, since the first impression was of cold garlic mashed potatoes. However, it went down pretty easily, especially with some of the sauce spooned over it. The soup of the day was a very thin cream of corn, which didn't exactly convince me, but wasn't bad. In any case, it was a very satisfying plate of food for 32RMB.
Although the outdoor window advertises coffee and milkshakes, the coffee machine was busted the day I visited. I was sorry to miss out, since the coffee is only 8RMB. Milkshakes are 12RMB, and the beers are 10 to 20RMB including Guinness. The gentle prices make Rice Plus a very solid value for the money, especially in this neighbourhood. We plan to be back.
