All the slick new mega malls are bringing more and more international chain restaurants to town, but we at MORE Chengdu are keeping an eye on a few home grown restaurant families as well. Travel Taste Buds has recently opened their third location with the right combination of good service, food, and décor; and is easy on the wallet to boot. We dropped by the Chunxi Road location in Silver Square one Thursday, but the line-up put us off. We had better luck getting a table again on a Sunday.
The servers went out of their way to accommodate us, pulling out a table and bringing an extra chair when we wanted to sit away from the smoking area. We had to squint a bit to figure out the menu, which is in classical characters and has some inventively named dishes, but the servers know the dishes well and made some good recommendations. The shredded cabbage with bean threads (连白粉丝) was a classic, kung pao chicken (宫保鸡丁) was tangy and toasty with peanuts, and the stir fried abalone mushrooms (小抄杏鲍菇) were fragrant and chewy. They had a home-style fish dish that was very tasty and the bones were not a problem (豇豆热炖甜鱼). The pea shoots (豌豆尖) were expertly done. We saw rice-steamed ribs (粉蒸排骨) on many other tables, and chestnut rabbit (板栗烧嫩兔). We made do with the self serve lemon water but there were some interesting looking drinks and cocktails on the beverage menu that we plan to explore on a later visit.
The restaurant is family friendly but most of the tables were filled with dates or with groups of friends. We thought the food was really well-prepared and presented. Cost per head is a very reasonable RMB30-50 including drinks.
