It’s not saying much to say that Salut is the best Spanish tapas restaurant in Chengdu, because it’s the first and so far the only. Chengdu got lucky enough to not only get a tapas restaurant at long last, but also to get a pretty authentic one. The Gazquez brothers, Pepe and Agusti, are two experienced Catalan restauranteurs hailing from the Costa Brava region in Spain, where they operate another restaurant, albeit from a long way away. They are, therefore, purists. The food is all prepared by the brothers and another Catalonian assistant. Except for the vegetables and some of the pork and chicken, the ingredients are all imported from Spain: olives, olive oil, anchovies, chorizo and the vino, of course.
The location in the Shuadu amusement area is inspired, as the outdoor chairs and the white Christmas lights and the folks gamboling about are weirdly reminiscent of an alley in Barcelona. Salut has maybe ten tables, half outside, and the brothers are adding an awning for the rainy season. A nice place for a date, therefore, or for a big table of friends, but best make sure those friends are prepared to pay around 150 yuan per head for a full meal, including wine, before you start ordering. They plan to offer dance lessons, Spanish movies on their fat projector, and seasonal specials.
For noshing, we particularly recommend Adolphe’s Meatballs, the Anchoas, and naturally the classic Tortillas Español, which have absolutely nothing in common with a Mexican tortilla, mind you. Note: Taxis have to drop you off at the entrance to Shuadu, so you have to find #118 on foot. English menu available.
