Talk restaurant advertises its 88 RMB set business lunches in several magazines across the city, but, leery of fusion cuisine (Talk boasts Sichuan and French Flavors), I didn’t decide to invest until a friend mentioned that she loved the place. As a vegetarian, she is on a first name basis with the two managers and always calls before she stops in for lunch so the kitchen can prepare a business lunch vegetarian option ready for her arrival. During our meal at Talk, we were showed the same attentive service, and the food was impeccable to boot. Set on the fifth floor of a high end department store, Talk’s modern interior boasts a slick, plush dining room/lounge complete with gold crepe tablecloths and comfortable seats. Note: Beware the bathroom. There are so many full-length mirrors, it’s hard not to run into one while looking for the exit. In true celebratory fashion, my date and I started lunch off with a martini bang. The Vespers (James Bonds’ drink of choice) were perfectly made. My date ordered the Western set lunch menu, which that day was beef salad and seafood pasta. The salad was bound with light homemade mayonnaise and served in an arugula and balsamic reduction. The portion was mostly high quality beef, the flavors very clean and perfectly combined. The seafood pasta came in a large bowl, spicy and full of tender shrimp. My Salad Nicoise was less inspired, but the tuna and vegetables were fresh. The main course of cleverly spiced chicken rolls were stuffed with chorizo and served with a smoky, rich sauce (adapted to my no butter or cream requirement). The dish was finished off quickly. Frozen cream custard, served with passion fruit sauce rounded off the meal. Overall, Talk lives up to all of the hype – high-end cuisine that’s well worth the price.
