There are many places in Chengdu to sit with a cup of coffee and your laptop. Kaffestugan is one of the most appealing. The Swedish café’s been opened for a few months now, and serves fresh roasted coffee that is ground and brewed to order. Rotations of beautiful art and photography line the walls, fresh flowers, and candles in the evening give a lot of personality to the décor. The service is unfailingly attentive and gracious. With only a few tables, the place is small enough that you are not going to be lining up for the bathrooms, which are Western style. The place is very easy to find, right across the first ring from Hong Wa Si.
One other reason to drop by is that Kaffestugan has a deceptively simple menu of good things to eat. There are a few Swedish specialties, sandwiches, and snacks, including a couple of vegetarian selections. The open-faced sandwiches and bagel are all prepared with attention paid both to appearance and flavor. You can order a plate of eggs dotted with olives and salami and crisscrossed with ketchup that tastes amazing, if nothing like anything the Swedish side of my family ever came up with. The house-made cookies and cakes have way more personality than their looks may suggest, which is just fine with us. Yes, they do serve Swedish meatballs, though we do wish they had more green stuff on the menu. Prices and portions are both modest; lunch with coffee for two will not leave you much change from a 100RMB bill. English and Chinese menus are available.
