Hotel restaurants are often a good bet for when we have an appetite for something other than the local fare. We went to sample the lunch buffet at the Haiyatt (no, not that Hyatt) Garden Chengdu’s, Premier Court Western Restaurant on the edge of Chunxi Road. In very casual street clothes we felt a little under-dressed, but we were treated very considerately and given a tour of the buffet stations before beginning.
The selection at this buffet does not feature lots of luxury food items, nor is it as big as some of the other buffets in town size, but it more than makes up for these shortcomings in quality. The chefs pay real attention to presentation, even in the bowls of hot food items, and everything was clearly labeled in Chinese and English.
There was a choice of cold seafood including shrimp, mussels, and clams. The salad section was simple, but well-stocked with dressings that tasted freshly mixed. The western food section had fantastic ox tripe with garlic and mushrooms. Pizza on a buffet is usually terrible, but we sampled some anyway and were very impressed with the sauce.
We particularly loved the Southeast Asian items. Eating spicy food that was about more than just ‘ma’ and ‘la’ felt pretty good; there were Indian lamb kebabs, Thai pork and pumpkin curry with coconut milk, and Singapore style noodles. We didn't make much of a dent in the Taiwanese snacks or dim sum, and didn't notice anyone manning the sashimi station until we were already into dessert.
The desserts we tried tasted as good as they looked. The cheesecake had a tang of real cream cheese. I wish they'd used some for the icing on the American carrot cake, though. The chocolate mousse melted in your mouth, and the 'dark forest cake' had a good chocolate and cherry thing happening.
The lunch buffet is 98RMB/person, includes coffee, and they do not tack on a service charge, so we had plenty of cash left over for an afternoon at the shops.
