The Lido Sheraton, one of the oldest top-end hotels in Chengdu, is in the heart of the city, steps away from the Luo Ma Shi subway station. There are several restaurants including the Nova Café and Grill, which features both international and Chinese cuisine. MORE was recently invited to try their buffet.
The cold dish area had a tempting collection of seafood, salads, and a couple of local, spicy, cold dishes. One unusual dish we really enjoyed was crunchy lotus root in orange dressing. They had a very good cooling medicinal Cantonese soup made with black fungus, black chicken, ginseng, and red dates. We particularly wanted to try their fresh pasta, cut to order and offered with meat sauce or tomato sauce. A few minutes after placing the order we were rewarded with delicate fresh carrot pasta in a garlic tomato sauce with a few shreds of hard cheese over top. This is definitely a standout dish among the buffets in town.
Of the hot dishes, we enjoyed the roasted potatoes, the fried catfish in a dill sauce, some salty soy-braised ribs, and a gorgeous Asian Style Duck Confit on a Chinese Herbal Risotto. They have a station of seafood and meat that can be cooked to order with different sauces. The steaks looked nicely marbled. The dishes at the Chinese station included Cantonese dim sum, barbecue, and fresh noodles as well as familiar local favorites like twice-cooked pork.
The cakes and sweet treats from the Sheraton have a well-deserved reputation that puts them very in demand for catering functions. As challenging as it may be, saving room for dessert here is key. The buffet dessert offerings make up for lack of variety with their beauty and attention to detail both in taste and appearance. We particularly loved the smooth-as-silk coconut panna cotta, and the chocolate brownie with a mini tuile on top. We got a scoop of excellent quality chocolate ice cream on the side. The last thing you eat at a great meal is often the first thing you remember about it, and we will remember this one for a long time.
