Italian restaurants are not rare in Chengdu, but Pizza Mandolino, who hosted MORE recently, is notable for the scope and authenticity of its menu. From the selection of pastas, all well-matched with their sauces, we enjoyed a classic tagliatelle alla bolognese with a rich, deep-flavoured, sauce generously covering the noodles. A quick scan of the other tables showed that pizza is by far the most popular dish, and for good reason. There are no par-baked crusts here. The two large ovens that dominate the work space were working overtime, turning out a gorgeous Parma ham pizza that came out with a puffy and blistered crust, tastefully dressed with arugula, basil, and cheese. The sirloin steak, which was featured on a separate barbecue menu, was juicy and proved to us that venturing outside the pizza and pasta choices can be quite rewarding.
The wine list is as thick as the menu with a big selection of Italian bottles mostly in the low to mid three figures. We are impressed they offer a reasonably priced wine by the glass. There is a good selection of beers as well, including Italian Menabrea, available in town only at Pizza Mandolino. There is also a list of virgin cocktails and a non-alcoholic mojito made with real mint and limes that was well received. From the desserts on display we got a classic tiramisu with layers of ladyfingers, soft cheese and a sprinkle of cocoa on top.
Pizza Mandolino is capable of putting out some of the best and most authentic Italian food we've come across in Chengdu. Fresh flowers and candles in wine bottles on the tables make for a romantic atmosphere. The band was a little loud for conversation in our corner but did some decent covers and sang happy birthday to one table of celebrators. The cost per guest is also suited for occasions and celebrations, around 200 yuan per person.
