Recently, MORE was hosted by the crew at Mix and Match. They’ve been open a few months and are starting to hit their stride. They’re already popular enough to have a line-up on a midweek evening. We found a parlour-sized dining room with a handful to tables, Springsteen on the soundtrack and the two-man band in the tiny kitchen rocking out dishes to a full house. The menu at Mix and Match is brief and eclectic with a Spanish flavour, and they have specials that change every week.

We appreciate places that know how to do simple stuff well. So an appetizer of tomatoes dressed with olive oil, vinegar, garlic, and fresh thyme was enjoyed as much as foie mousse served with thin toasts and jam. One appetizer of shrimp stuffed with cream cheese and chives we expected would be a cold dish but the shrimp were deep fried in a thick batter and the cream cheese filling was a nice complement to the crispy coating. A dish of steamed clams came bathed in a garlic and parsley ‘green sauce’ that was fantastic. We asked for more of the very good bread to mop it up.

We tried the New Zealand tenderloin which should please those who enjoy this cut of meat, nicely seared and pink on the inside and served with a sauce and mashed potatoes. A standout dish of the night was rack of lamb over a well cooked couscous and silky apple cream. For vegetarians, the kitchen prepares a filling mushroom lasagne. We like that the wine list is quite accessible with most bottles in the low three figures and by the glass options starting at RMB25 each. The food menu runs around RMB80-RMB120 per person. There is a Tuesday to Friday special from 5pm-7pm of free tapas with drinks, and we are excited that they are planning to serve a Spanish brunch on Sundays starting in November.
