When The Lazy Pug’s original location closed earlier this year amid an uncertain future, the cool American restaurant was deeply missed and we were happy to see The Pug redux open in slick new digs near the Regal Master Hotel. When we dropped in to check the place out on a recent Friday, we found some familiar touches: brick covered walls displaying travel photos and the bluesy soundtrack making us feel less tense as soon as we walked in. The dining room was full enough that we had to wait for a table, and the outside tables are for drinks only.

We asked for a plate of nachos to start and were rewarded with a pile of thick, crunchy, fresh flour tortilla chips judiciously loaded with cheese, pickled jalapenos, seasoned ground beef, onions, and sour cream. The chips made worthy ballast for the margarita special they had that evening. Warning, they pack a kick. The last few cocktails we’ve ordered in town have left us wondering if the bartender forgot the alcohol. We didn’t have that problem here. We got a burger, which was well-bunned and constructed and sided with fresh cut chips that had plenty of potato flavour. Optional add-ons for the burger include bacon and blue cheese. The chicken parmesan was a generous slab of white meat covered with tangy sauce and a liberal sprinkle of good cheese over spaghetti. The menu is short and they offer a few specials every night.

Like the best indie restaurants, The Pug has adaptability and personality as strong points. The team there takes obvious pride in doing good stuff, and we hope they will be sticking around for a while. Their regular menu with drinks will run between RMB100-150 per person; Sunday brunch around RMB50 per person. Their Thanksgiving special will be offered again this November, and booking early is recommended.
