The cupcake trend has managed to outlast many people’s predictions, and thanks to a popular American sitcom it seems to be gaining some traction and has even hit Chengdu. Cupcakes are easy to make and easy to enjoy, and hold childhood memories of baking and decorating for many. A really good cupcake is one of those small things that can make an ordinary day feel special. After sampling several cupcakes sold around town, however, we found that with the exception of the treats at the excellent Cakey Butta, a cupcake that lived up to our childhood memories proved elusive.

After checking out the Rui Li Road branch of Cuppit, joy was found and faith in good cupcakes was restored. Their offerings are a perfect size and fresh, with natural tasting flavours, a good cake to frosting ratio, and not too sweet. The strawberry cupcake we started with was topped with rich, real whipped cream and a fresh strawberry. We also sampled a dense red velvet cupcake with smooth, tangy cream cheese icing. Their devil’s food cupcake, though lacking the red tinge we usually associate with this kind of cake, was beautiful and the chocolate flavour came through. They have a peanut butter cupcake, a cheesecake, blueberry flavour topped with a real fresh berry, and tiramisu. The selection is always a little different each time we go in. When ordered to go, the individual cakes are boxed prettily and would make a great gift for someone with a sweet tooth. They also do special orders for occasions, as well as regular cakes and cake pops. Coffee and tea are also served, and we think it deserves to be much busier. Most cupcakes are around RMB25.
