We were excited to check out Chengdu's newest five star hotel, the Hilton down near the software park. Most of the dishes on their third floor Standard restaurant menu are familiar Italian restaurant fare, but we noticed a few innovative touches on the menu descriptions, such as their caprese salad made with tomato confit and smoked buffalo mozzarella, and a quinoa risotto with potato espuma.
A pillowy ciabatta with crisp crust and a whole grain bread baked with herbs and tomatoes got things off to a great start. We mixed up a western style 'youdie' with olive oil and vinegar for the bread and enjoyed it a lot. The caprese salad was served under a glass cone that let out a smoky aroma when lifted, and this usually delicate salad packed quite a wallop of flavour. The quinoa risotto was pleasantly earthy with potatoes both roasted and foamed, mushrooms, and the green sponge looking like moss. The pizza diavola had spicy peppers, pepperoni, and sliced garlic over the cracker-thin crust. The oven roasted pork, one of their most popular dishes, was plated beautifully with crispy skin and baby vegetables. The New Zealand lamb was lean and moist and attractively sided with steamed vegetables. We appreciate the focus on good ingredients and healthy preparations at The Standard.
Their signature chocolate dessert is called Queen of Paris, and combines hazelnut, house made chocolate ice cream, a disc of very good quality chocolate and warm chrysanthemum cream poured tableside. The lemon tart is filled with tangy curd and topped with house made lemon ice cream, sided with meringue chips and dollops for the classic pairing, and has crumbled pistachios adding some texture. The wine list has mostly European but also a few New World selections and is very easy to navigate by style, grape, and area. We are impressed they offer ten selections by the glass.
The lunch set menu offers a starter and pizza or pasta for 88 RMB. The hotel will also be doing Christmas dinner and other promotions during the holiday season. Regular menu 200-300 per person food only. 15% service charge added.
