Lugu Lake, Yanyuan, Sichuan
Lugu Lake allows for long (unsupervised) day treks filled with breathtaking quiet, beautiful views of the large, high-altitude lake, and peeks into traditional Mosuo life. Situated half in northern Yunnan, half in Sichuan, Lugu Lake is surrounded by rugged forests and mountains. The area is mostly snowbound in wintertime, and it takes about 9 hours of high winding roads to get there by bus from Lijiang in Yunnan, or you can opt to take the train to Xichang in Sichuan and bus from there. There are lots of cool rice patties, and little seen minority villages along the way. At the bus station, find a van to take you to Lugu (pay no more than 60yuan for the 2 hour ride). It is 80 yuan to enter the park itself. Once in, I suggest staying away from the bigger town of Luoshui （落水），which offers standard accommodations. Instead, make a beeline to Lige（里格）a small village run chiefly by local families who offer comfy hostels and help arranging your touring and trekking plans. Most also have homey traditional food. Try a whole fish, the local wild vegetables (like fern heads) and hearty buckwheat pancakes. If you don’t mind not having a flush toilet, head out to Lige “island” (actually a peninsula) which is even farther from the noise, and it’s on the water. Bring layers of clothes for cool evenings and quick changes for the occasional weather change. Water-proofing is particularly important.
Admission Fee: 80RMB
